So, I found two youtube channles, Nerdist and Geekandsundry on the channels they have geeky shows. On Geekandsundry, I found a half hourish show called Sword and Laser. It is a book club/review/interview show and they link to their website that has over 100 podcasts. The show also has a forum set up on Goodreads (a online bookshelf sort of) and their book club is set up there. The books are fantasy and Sci-fi (sword being fantasy)

I decided to join up with Sword and Laser. They read 1 book a month, discuss it and review it. This months book is "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons. I have started reading it and, I have to say I like it. It is a sort of Canterbury Tales'ish I'm only on the first tale, but I have read reviews and most are very positive. Some reviews talk about explicit sex scenes (I have not gotten to one yet) and there is violence so It is more adult oriented.

The reason why I am posting is to see if anyone wants to join up and talk about books? See if you agree or disagree with the show and the people they quote on the show.

I'm going to try my best to keep up lol (i just got the book last night and only 12% done).

If you have already read the book its ok feel free to join the discussion. If you can only read part of the book and ditch it because of work or family or what ever (or the book is horrible in your eyes) thats ok too we can talk about what you have read so far. Some books are not for everyone and this is a open discussion feel free to say whats on your mind.

A few of the CHARCON staff are going to set up some historical games outside of the Riflemen Store this coming Saturday in conjuction with the Armed Forces Day Parade at noon. We plan to start setting up about 10am.

We plan to set up a Pearl Harbor, D-Day and Gettysburg board. These are three very important moments in American history and fit well into the theme of the parade on Saturday.

This will be done to help promote miniature gaming (which is going to be a focus of CHARCON this year) and the convention itself.

We will be handing out CHARCON flyers as well.

if anyone wants to come by and help promote CHARCON feel free to come by.

Also, if you do and you have a CHARCON shirt please wear it to help make the CON more visible.

So, I'm thinking about Charcon this fall. Normally I run some version of Orc n Pie. However, since this year's theme is the Apocolypse, and I've already done Zombie Orc n Pie, I'm thinking of running one of the following choices. I have plots in mind for each game, but I'm not ready to spoiler 'em at this time. I'm just trying to decide which one will garner the most interest. Any feedback would be appreciated.

1) A Mad Max theme via the Car Wars Compendium... "We gotta get these pies to Midville."

2) A Cthulhuesque theme via the Delta Green d20... "Soylent pies, they're PEOPLE."

3) An Orc n Pie theme via Pathfinder RPG... "The orcs need your help. Aberrant things from the Dark Tapestry are invading the lower dungeons.

4) A Reavers Gone Wild theme via Serenity RPG... "It's Reavers, all hands abandon shiiiaarrrghh"

On Monday, May 14, Lincoln Matthew Davis will be born. Sheila and I just set the date earlier today after visiting our doctor. The original due date was May 21 so we are going to be a week early due to some minor medical issues. We will go to the hospital Sunday night and have a baby sometime between Noon and Midnight Monday.
FYI, we have a small bag of games to play during the quiet times, if there are any!

Hi. I'm looking to get my feet wet with an RPG. I have played a very short campaign of D&D using a sort of hybrid 4th/3.5 approach and enjoyed it, but might like to try a little something else. What would be a nice, simple-ish system to try out? I like the D&D world, but also like steampunk and other kinds of aesthetics.

Thanks much.

I group in Huntington are trying to build vacuum formed thermo-molded plastic "building blocks" designed to resemble a concrete prefabricated fortress, or other battlefield fortification for modern era or Sci-fi fantasy table top miniature games in the 28mm, 1/48, or 30mm scale range. They have a Kickstarter going on to raise the money to do it.

Can anyone recommend a good superhero RPG?

I've previously tried Champions and have both Silver Age Sentinels and Necessary Evil but am looking for something different. I haven't tried M&M, Bash or ICONS yet.

I'd like something that covers power levels pretty well but have no preference on rules light versus crunch.
