Default How do YOU make a character

Me personally it depends on the system, if it is point buying, I think up a general idea and build on it. If it is dice rolling i let the dice speak to me and i think up something by what the dice tell me. I will be playing in two upcomming games, a oldschool white wolf werewolf game (if the gm decideds to run it) and a Naruto/shadowrun game (baised on the manga/anime using shadowrun system).

The Werewolf game i am abit worried about because i cant remember the system at all so i will be going in green. I need to reread the werewolf book and think something up...

As for Naruto/shadowrun, totally used to it for the most part so Im not worried about it at all.

I get an idea, and make the numbers work for it. If the numbers don't work, a little tweaking of the idea may be needed.

I don't know what system is the best for character ideas, some systems have cookie cutter character system...you play a warrior you get this and that period. no to very little customization, other then the roleplaying aspect, and that can be...irksum. when people play themselves more then the character...a min maxed character with low assed cha, int and wis should not beable to talk their way out most situations...stats that make a cave man look smart should even beable to make complete sentences...

I like the point system. It takes the randomness out of it. And since every PC is built on the same number of points, it slows the powergamers down.

I do like point buying for the most part it gives great ability to make a well rounded character or min maxing what ever floats your boat. Though the point buy system is alittle daunting for newcommers because of the shear numbers of things bought. The Dice rolling method gives less options as a whole but it has its merits too, just roll the dice and plop them in.

of course 3 systems that come to mind the are different then the norm are, old shadowrun with the priority system, deadlands with the card system, and Amber the diceless rpg with their barter system.

Point system all the way. Everyone cheats at rolling.

I like the rolling system, but with GM supervision to prevent cheating, and the GM has the power to raise or lower certain stats, or deem that the player should just re-roll a new set all together. I also like the point buy system, however sometimes the point buy systems can be a bit underpowered so I usually give the players some extra bonus points to start with as long as they make good reasons why their characters have stats or skills in certain areas.

As for how I make characters, I start with a concept of what I think I'll have fun playing, and try to think up a little back story to give the character a little more personality, perhaps tie an interesting personality quirk to some special skills or abilities that the character has. After that I try to make the stats and rules fit my idea, and tweak from there.

I usually let the dice or the points come first then i start with a concept on what i can make with said points or rolls. I'm guilty of sometimes stealing ideas from t.v. or movies. They have made for some wild characters because i make my own spin off of the character idea.
