    Default Gencon

Well, Gencon is coming up in just a couple weeks. Is anyone out there going? Who has been in the past? Who has some great Gencon stories they can share with us all?

Myself and the bulk of my Saturday night group are going up that wednesday and staying through Sunday. This will be my maiden voyage, but im sure Don has some nuggets of Gencon experience that he can share. My regret is that I didn't go last year. I never met Gygax.

I went to several GENCON's while it was still in Milwaukee. I lived in Chicago for a few years and made it a point to go. Only about an hour away. I went a couple of times after that as well. I am glad they moved it. The hall up there was too small for the event and there were never enough hotels in city (or at least close by).

This will be my first year since it moved to Indy that I will not be going. Indy is a much nicer venue for the event. Lots of room, lots of hotels and a lot of things to do around the Con.

I met Gygax several times while at GENCON. One event I remember was a roundtable with him and some people that had recently taken over TSR. I cannot recall their names, but I do remember that these people were rude, arrogant and just down right unlikeble.

They talked down to Gygax and made it look like that he wasn't really important in the whole picture of the D&D world.

One of my favorite things about GENCON is the auction. It lasts for 3 days. It is the best place to find those hard to find items, that EBAY sellers would rape you for, at a reasonable cost.

The auction is hosted by many of the original founders of TSR and it's associated companies. These people have a LOT of industry insider info on the items that are being auctioned off why it is or is not a good buy (and they will tell the audience if it is not a good buy).

I've been going for the past 5 years (sitting this one out), but if you're up for gaming, you can find all you can handle and more! Just try to find time to sleep!

24hr Anime films area, 24hr gaming rooms, game/collectible auctions late into the evening...If this is your first trip, you might just be a little overwhelmed!

Heh, not only is this going to be my first trip to Gencon, but I am only going for one day! Ted, Kris and I are hopping over on Saturday. I figure we will spend a large amount of our time in the Vendor hall and doing interviews and such.

I figure we will get in very little actual gaming.

I'll be at GenCon this year. Last year, I won several badges for myself and my family. My husband won one when I submitted a photo he had taken at the previous year's GenCon (using his name of course). Then I won one for my story about experiencing GenCon '06 via phone and internet since I was on bedrest. Then I also won one for having the most points at www.gamerchicksrule.com. So, that helped some with last year's expenses.

This year, I get to count at least a portion of GenCon as a tax deductible business expense since I will be working with SimplyFun while I'm there. :-D

I lived in Chicago but had an office in downtown Milwaukee. My house was less than an hour away from downtown Milwaukee as well so it wasn't that much of a drive.
