Thread: RPG over internet ?

    Default RPG over internet ?

Since many of us have trouble making the time for in person meetups for gaming I was wondering if there was any interest in maybe playing something over the internet ? There are some cool programs out there that facilitate gaming over the internet, such as OpenRPG and Virtual Tabletop

I just wanted to throw it out there as a possible method for us to get together more often, if only virtually.

    I like this one.

    http://www.fantasygrounds.com/

It's not free however so everyone getting a copy might be a problem.

Each player would need the $20 version

    I have a copy.

Here's a post about it on the rpg.net forums

I would be up for it too. I've actually been playing D&D and DC Heroes with some guys over Skype but I don't get to as much as I would like to as they do a lot of games on weekdays. Only problem is, none of us can figure out how to make OpenRPG work. So we are just trusting each other with the dice rolls.

But anyway, yeah I am up for moonlighting on another game with some of you guys.

On the subject of online RPG'ng. I just found out recently the D&D 4th edition is coming out this year and it will feature an online gaming component similar to things like OpenRPG. But also all the books like Monster Manual and etc. will be integrated into it. They were talking about it on this weeks episode of the Geeks On podcast.

I've just started running a few games online but like RPOL.net and Pen and Paper Games a great deal. The more active game I'm running is on RPOL and the nature of it isn't a bad substitute to gaming in person.

The dynamic is a bit different since what I'm doing is PbP but the general degree of detail is the same and the immersion is pretty good. Mechanically, it's also similar but it lacks the camaradarie you get from face to face. Definitely a substitute for someone who doesn't have a group to work with (like me) but not a replacement. Face to face is much preferred.

I liked some of the more developed ones that offered the online mapping, etc. Was also intrigued that they had offered Savage Worlds rulesets as well as d20. I just cant pull the trigger to buy into one, to try it out. If I could find a good solid grp to get involved with, I think it would be worthwhile... But tI would be afraid of investing & then getting stuck with crap crews, or games that never develop, or lack direction in general

I've demo'd and seen the FantasyGrounds / Virtual Desktop in action it looks pretty cool. I might even be willin to cough up the funds for it if I found a game I was interested in.

I would be interested in giving this a shot. Playing maybe once or twice per month. Plus we could create a forum here to support the game.
