    Default The Mist

Dont worry, this is spoiler free.

So I finally got around to watching The Mist, it is an adaptation of one of my favorite Stephen King stories (novella). I have to say that I think this is probably the BEST Stephen King adaptation done to date and I really really liked it. The creatures in the mist are rarely seen full on, only the smaller ones are seen well....I loved how the really big monstrosities (that would likely drive you mad just by looking at them) were only hinted at in the shrouding cover of the mist. It is definitely a very Lovecraftian story and the movie played on that well.

There was a great scene at the beginning where the protagonist (who paints movie posters and book covers for a living) is finishing up an awesome portrait of Roland Deschain from the Dark Tower.

The ending was great...no sappy Hollywood ending here.

If you haven't seen it, and you dig Stephen King/Lovecraft I think you will really enjoy this flick.

I saw it in the theater and remember I told ya it was awesome! I loved that it had an even darker ending than the novella did.

I geeked out over the Roland painting too.

I'm definitely buying the DVD when it comes out. The special 2 disc edition includes the movie in black and white and should prove to be very creepy and atmospheric. Frank Darabont wanted to release it in theaters that way but the studio wouldn't allow it.

I read the novella when I was a kid & it scared the hell out of me. Whenever I first read Lovecraft, this was the story that I compared his writing to... (well the other way around, but you know what I mean) He did a great job of conveying the feeling of being completely lost & the situation being completely hopeless. King always does a good job with that. I will have to grab it on PPV.

Mist may be a great movie, but i think The Stand miniseries wins the award for being the best King cheese adaption. Gary Sinise & Molly Ringwold in the same movie? awesome!

btw the book is *soooo* much better - i read it every year

I watched the entire Stand miniseries, I love the book, and Gary Sinise is cool and all, but I thought it was cheesy too. Only by sheer fandom could I have tolerated watching it.

The Stand was the first King book I REALLY got into. I loved it. Then It, & the Dark Tower books. Any movie adaptation has been junk though, except for The Shining... Which ironically King hated enough to remake his own wretched adaption.

If people really knew how many times I have fantasized about being in a post-apocalyptic type scenario they would lock me away. I am constantly evaluating my surroundings wondering what would be the best stronghold in the event of a zombie outbreak.

The book of The Stand is one of my favorites too, but the movie just doesn't hold up. When compared to a lot of other King adaptations though, it is very good and among the best. But I still say The Mist is THE best.

King is talking with Marvel Comics about adapting The Stand as a limited series. I think this is a good idea depending on who the creative team is. I have been very happy with The Dark Tower comics so I have good expectations for The Stand.
